In 2017, Bugiri District Farmers Association (BDFA), in collaboration with the PSFU-BDF Project, implemented an irrigation training initiative aimed at empowering 80 youth and women.
The project responded to the growing effects of drought, which had negatively impacted agricultural production and affected vulnerable groups in the community. Participants were trained in different irrigation techniques using affordable and locally available materials.
The training enabled youth and women to engage in agricultural production throughout the year, even during dry seasons. Today, some of the beneficiaries produce vegetables, tomatoes, and watermelons, which are marketed locally and in neighboring countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
The project demonstrated how affordable irrigation technologies can contribute to youth empowerment, increased production, and sustainable livelihoods.
